Astro Classic Golden Melody is an amateur singing competition for
those aged 45 and above, providing a platform for senior citizens to
demonstrate their talent. Nevertheless, this competition gets the
highest rating for AEC Channel from 2006 till 2008, and won the Best
Costume Award in Film Worker's Association of Malaysia 2006 & 2007
and the Best Art Director Award in 2007.
The
theme for this year’s show is "Charm of Classic" with the tagline
"Sing the Classics", which encouraged the seniors to perform the
classics with a fresh interpretation. The contestants were encouraged
to select classic Chinese songs from 1970 to 1989, in Mandarin or
any Chinese dialects, such as Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka or Teochew.
The show featured five rounds of competition with various themes,
with new ones being the Teresa Teng round, the revival round and the
challenge round.
Summer Grace singing duo, Kwok Voon Voon and sister Yen Yen, as well as Lim Tiong Piow
returned as hosts for this year's edition which was held on the 23rd
May 2009 at the Arena of Stars. Walk-in
auditions were held on the 7th and 8th February 2009 and
attracted over 800 aspiring singers.
